I think often when people roleplay they get so caught up in the "roleplaying" aspect - being true to the character - they forget they're also supposed to be creating an interesting story and playing game. You can play the role of a hermit druid who sits in his grove meditating all day really well... but if you don't see anyone, and don't do anything, its a wasted effort. If you need to invent excuses as to why that character visits the city, or involves himself in a treasure hunt, do so.
