That Crazy Baleful Polymorph

So as one side effect of our grand adventure tonight, we inadvertently discovered that Baleful Polymorph might be just a little bit OP.

So at first, we got into it with Grand Magister Sutharan and his lackeys. At some point, Sutharan hit Ashard Blake with Baleful Polymorph, Ashard booched his Save and he got chickenized. I had Braweann blast Ashard with three Dispel Magics, hoping that they would eat the Polymorph. They didn't, and friendlyguy sent me a Tell saying that all I was doing was stripping off his buffs, which was expectable; the Dispel Magic spells are rather hit-and-miss when it comes to getting rid of a certain magic effect.

But then, soon after that, Sutharan decided that he wanted some chicken, so he ran up and started smacking Ashard around. Braweann went through her nine-thousand scrolls and tried to pepper Sutharan with Isaac's Greater Missile Storm. To my horror, my dutiful mouse cursor somehow missed little, tiny Sutharan, went past him and hit littler, tinier, chicken-shaped Ashard instead, swiftly resulting in a dead Ashard and a less-than-pleased Tell from friendlyguy. Sorry about the own goal, FG. emoticon

But I also couldn't help but notice that Ashard remained in chicken form after my Greater Missile Storm struck him dead. Characters who die while under the effects of Polymorph Self or Shapechange revert to their normal forms at the moment of death. This didn't happen with Baleful Polymorph. Hence, my surprise. Raising Ashard from the dead didn't undo the Baleful Polymorph either; he was back to being a living chicken, that's all. I think Numos ended up fixing it with his magical DM wand somehow.

So is Baleful Polymorph working as intended, or might its script need just a smidgen of tinkering?

I'm curious if it was so hard to dispell because it was Sutharan who cast it and... well, he was kind of a badass.

In hindsight, I'm pretty sure that's what it was. But in the heat of the moment, you're not thinking things like "Well, let's [sign in to see URL] Sutharan is a spellcaster of Level 19 or higher, and Dispel Magic only gets a +10 to its modifier, then there's no way that Dispel Magic is going to work. And it would be nice if I could cast Mordie's Disjunction instead." You're just thinking more along the lines of "ZOMG! Ashard's a chicken, I can only cast Polymorph Self on myself so it's no good and I have to change him back right now!" emoticon

But still, there's the death-and-raising thing. emoticon

Thank you, Uncle Numos. emoticon

But since we mentioned it, will a sufficiently powerful Dispel cancel Baleful Polymorph too?

In order to dispel any effect you roll a Dispelling check (1d20 + Dispel Magic CL + Spell Focus Abjuration Bonus) vs. (11 + Spell CL). This has always been true of Baleful Polymorph.

You'd need to beat DC 36 in the case of Sutharan, something Dispel Magic (capped at +10) is incapable of. Only Disjunction, or Greater Dispelling to be cast by an abjurer would have worked.

Aww. That job was definitely out of my league, then. Sorry, Ashard, but Braweann went the Enchantment route instead of Abjuration. emoticon

(But hey, did you see all of those Librarians, Ley Seekers and Slaadi that Braweann was Holding, Confusing and Hideous-Laughtering last night? I stand by my choice. emoticon )

(And it's a minor point, but I should probably point out that Dispel Magic's description is a little bit off. Apparently The Krit has tested these ]Dispel spells and found that the DC to dispel is actually 12 plus the spell's caster's Level. It wouldn't be the first inaccuracy in a NWN spell description, alas.)
