The Woes of Queen Medb's Court

Feel free to move this topic if it doesn't quite fit this forum, Numos.

Now, quite a few of our players hold their breaths every time the server resets, anticipating where the third exit in the Underworks will lead. Cumberland Road? There is much rejoicing. Valor's Rest? Not as much rejoicing (since, unless you're a Cleric or a Paladin, the undead can be a pain), but it's still cool. But every time Queen Medb's Court comes up, you can almost hear the collective groan ripple across the server. Numos himself has noticed this.

Obviously, the answer to this problem would not be to nerf Cumberland Road and Valor's Rest until Queen Medb's Court looks sterling by comparison; that kind of blatant manipulation can only tick people off. If Queen Medb's Court is not meeting the approval of the masses, then the problem lies with Queen Medb's Court, and the answer is to make that area better, more attractive, less likely to be perceived as a waste of time.

So how would one go about making Queen Medb's Court "cool"? How do we make it a place where players will think, "Ooh, Queen Medb's Court is back! I really should go there again..."?

Some ideas:

• The druid could sell more healing items or buff items, because frankly, the nectar and the fruit alone make for a very limited selection. Variety is good.

• The items that the druid sells could be cheaper than the standard serverwide prices, to compensate for Queen Medb's Court being unavailable more often than not. Chalk it up to druid magic or druid know-how.

• Either the druid or a new merchant (ie. a traveling huckster or a farmer) might sell food items such as apples, bread, cured ham, haggis or such. Player-characters do like their food.

• A huckster or a tinkerer, attracted to the Tree of Life and its crowd, may sell trinkets or curios that aren't available anywhere else. You might be surprised at how many characters will buy a perfectly ordinary dagger or halberd just because it has one of those high-Color-option appearances that are pretty rare on this server.

• A new Wheel of Fortune set up in Queen Medb's Court functions as an hourly/daily/once-per-server-reset game of chance. Sometimes you win 50,000 krowns. Sometimes you lose 20,000 krowns. Sometimes you get a Greater animal buff cast on you as if by a Level 20 spellcaster. Sometimes you get slapped with a curse. You don't know until you spin. Whether or not the Wheel of Fortune includes a pay-to-play fee--and how much that fee is--is up to Numos, of course, but, as it is with today's slot machines and Keno machines, the more you pay, the more you can win (or at least, the less you stand to lose).

• The side street (which currently goes nowhere) could lead to an arena. Go to the arena, talk to the pit master, choose your opponent and wait to be transported or allowed into the fight pit. If you win the fight, you win money or prizes. If you lose, you lose money. Or you just plain end up dead. Choose your fights carefully.

• A new money sink: a landlord office! Apartments and townhouses for sale start popping up all over Avendel, and Queen Medb's Court is the only place where you can see the layout of your potential future residence. If you find the sort of place that you like, just pick your location from a menu and pay your application fee, and the DM Team gets a notice about your character wishing to purchase a new residence. It might make player-character housing a bit easier on the DMs this way, if they had a variety of stock homes (and perhaps a partly automated process for applications, purchases or rentals as well).

What sounds good, and what other ideas can we come up with? Queen Medb's Court needs your support.

I would personally support the idea that the court needs defending from time to time, simulated by there being a small dungeon off a side street. Attackers could be evil fey, or they could be undead from the graveyard, or they could be agents of the witch king. If the library are being shown as not all bad, you could have a librarian quest giver who is studying the tree and wants it defended during his studies. If they are being shown as all bad, library forces could be the things that are being fought off.

To be fair, if it's in Avendel, and the Library don't want it there, there's likely not much "fighting off" to be done.

I'd rather add another area. Not all the exploration areas 'need' to be combat related. I'd prefer to put my energy into greater variety.

That totally radical Wheel of Fortune wouldn't be combat-related. Think of all the Trade Guild profits! emoticon
