Newbie questions

A few quesetions from a new player, I have had a look around for answers to these but without success.

Where is the island in relation to the rest of Faerun? i.e. how far out to sea is it, and to what extent does it have contact with the mainland?

How big is the island, and what is its population size? Similarly, what is the population of the major towns?

How big is the server? The dungeon list seems quite short, are there other smaller dungeons around as well?

Wheres the best place to start off a Tuatha PC, or indeed any nature orientated PC? How are they received in Avendel, and is there any disctinction made between Tuatha and elves from elsewhere?

Thats all for now, thanks!

No worries. Sometimes bits of established lore just go undocumented... and we unfortunately do not have any maps drawn up.

In the Trackless Sea. Between Lantan and the Moonshae Isles. The Empire has the most contact with Amn and Calimport.

About the size of New Zealand, though its north coast is dotted by innumerable tiny islands. The largest metropoli on the isle are Durinham and Avendel - sporting populations of over 10,000. The rest of the island is largely rural and dotted with several hundred small hamlets with populations of a few hundred.

I don't really know how to accurately measure server size. We've recently shifted a little in philosophy where I'm trying to include a greater variety of smaller dungeons and encounters. The current list includes the lengthier dungeons.

Bodkin, Thorneymoor, and Cathbad's Circle are probably where you'll largely be hanging out as a nature PC - when you're not roaming the wilds. In Avendel a Tu'atha or any savage or druidic PC will be regarded with extreme suspicion, and perhaps hassled by the watch, though there are some tribes that are friendlier to the Empire.

Tu'atha are a distinct ethnic group from other elves. Its'likely' that an outlander wood elf might be mistaken for one by humans, however. Generally most imperials' experiences with elves would be with Tu'atha.

If I may, as far as I've observed server size is generally measured in number of areas.

...regardless of if those areas' sizes are 1x1, 32x32 or somewhere in between. Too bad NWN doesn't give us a fast and easy "square footage" figure. emoticon

Thank you very much for the replies - and yes, by server size I had meant the number of areas.

Another question - are wizards native to Avendel all supposed to have some affiliation with the Library?

Not necessarily. Though, the Library does tend to keep an eye on most of the magical dealings on the island, and it's one of the more powerful groups, so in general it's better to submit to their paperwork and questioning, as opposed to being labeled a heretic or a threat to the empire.

Keep in mind that according to ]this thread, most of the wizards in Avendel, and likely the ones on the rest of the island, have had some training there, as it is the only place to go for a formal education in magic.

Of course, this may exclude sorcerers, foreigners, and wizards who left the island to seek their education.

Tuckerr is correct. Some wizards may, independantly, take on a student or two alo... but for the most part Imperial Wizards are indeed forced to learn in Avendel. And I'm inclined to agree about the issue of area count not being a very 'valid' measure of size, or even number of tiles for that matter.

In any case, welcome to the server! If you need help getting started or have any further questions don't hesitate to ask.

More!
Is there a dwarf population native to Aolyth, and do they have their own Halls/Delvings?

Whats the relationship between Erawyn and the other Gods? From what I see, thanks to some of his followers he may have a bit of a bad reputation in some quarters; I've made a cleric of Erawyn, and was wondering how she would likely be received if she announced herself as such - I had planned to rp her as offering help, guidance, healing etc to hunters.

Re: Newbie questions

Hello,

I found my way to Andrune too today. There are a few questions that I have.

- I just made a gnome bard. First the gnome seems to look like a dwarf. In the starting area the head models etc. are not the same like the gnome head models but they are the same like the dwarven ones. The whole physique seems to look dwarven In Game yet the character sheet says he is a gnome. Is this supposed to be so this way or is there something wrong?

- I may have made a mistake. The case is that my gnome bard gets 6 skill points with each level. I come from another server where bards got 2 extra skill points on leveling and maybe there is some override causing trouble. I did take 8*4 skill points on level one (he has 14 int, so that is 2 extra), but that was 8 too many. I did not realize this until I started to level my char and when I chose for more than 6 skill points to spend I got an error message saying that the number of skill points is invalid, which makes sense. I did manage to level him by just taking the 4 class + 2 bonus skill points from intelligence each level. The problem now is that he has 8 skill points from level 1 and those are 8 too many. I was thinking to give this as an heads up and that I won't be blamed for cheating instantly upon coming here emoticon
