Re: A Word on Reskinning Spells I don't, I find it a lot more helpful as a visual cue than that little icon that could also be ghostly visage or something. ^^
On another note however, and this is a thought shared by others as we discussed in-game...
I can understand why some spells have shorter durations, but all it really does is prevent role-playing.
Let me explain...
For lower level characters (where spells are concerned... for consumables, everyone is affected), it forces us to rush through dungeons for purely OOC reasons in fear of seeing our very needed buff spells or potions turn off in the middle of a fight. And, as explained elsewhere, they are very much needed.
Every moment spent typing emotes or dialogs is time lost on our short-duration buffs. So we have to rush!
It's sad, really.
Re: A Word on Reskinning Spells Stoneskin was given a shortened duration to account for the fact it now gives 10/+10 DR. Its going to protect you from a lot more powerful enemies, so the intent was to change it from a buff wizards throw up and ignore to more of an "Oh no we're in for a tough fight!" type spell.
Remember that you can rest anywhere you like. I see resting not so much as a full 8 hours rest but as your PC taking a breather, dressing wounds, etc. Given that its always a good idea to ask a DM when you're questing.
Now is the issue here that hour/level buffs ate expiring too soon or that turn/level buffs are so short you can't roleplay?
Re: A Word on Reskinning Spells Oh I forgot your view on resting!
I'm just SO used to not abusing it due to it being a long-term rest+study... I guess this changes a few things.
I didn't mean Stoneskin specifically though, it was more of a general observation, but Stoneskin was what brought it to mind.
The issue is that short durations makes people worried about roleplaying during dungeon runs. I don't know how the time works on the server in terms of in-game turns/hours vs RL time, so no idea if it's a matter of spell duration or in-game vs RL time.
It's not so much an -issue- as a thing that was discussed last night, in any case. It did seem to be a shared concern though so I thought someone should bring it up.
The quick respawns was also pointed out. I can't count how many times I roleplayed in the kobold caves and had kobolds respawn on us until we got annoyed and rushed to the exit. Of course kobolds aren't much of a threat and I can understand the reason behind this (would be annoying to go all the way to a quest area only to find it empty).
TL;DR: There are pros and cons to doing things like they're done, and there are other pros and cons in doing them otherwise, too. o_O
Re: A Word on Reskinning Spells The spell I think needs to be looked at for duration presently is displacement. More than once I've taken a potion of it and its worn off before Buffing was done. That feels far too short to me.
Otherwise, if you want the most bang for your buff, you should be runnin though dungeons and not stopping to RP. It's a bit of a frustrating system but its one inherent to NWN and not andrune alone. I suppose the only way to relieve it would be to only have spells tick down in duration during combat- which would be a cool feature but I don't actually think it is possible in the Aurora engine.
