Server Direct Connect

So I've got eveything up and running now I think on my side (THANKS TOTEMS!) but I can't seem to connect to the server.

I've been pasting
into the direct connect box but its returning a time out. Tried pinging the IP from cmd prompt and it couldn't find it either. Have I got the right address? Aware things might be down on the server side or I might be doing something really dumb my end.

Any thoughts?

So I can log in through my DM client, but in the regular client I get booted between choosing a character and entering the world. Any ideas?

Re: Server Direct Connect

I'm wondering if it might be a graphics card issue. Which OS are you running, what's your graphics card and did you update all your drivers after you had to reinstall everything?

Hmm I haven't checked my drivers since the reinstall actually, but wouldn't that affect both the dm and regular client rather than just one?

So the NWN server no longer checks if your password is correct when you try to use your account. That means I can technically type in "Ever_Fresh" as my account, hammer in any password, and log as Kedri.

To stop this I instituted a security system that binds characters to a specific CD-Key. Since you're using a new CD-key it thinks that someone is trying else is trying to log as kedri and delete all his items or something.

Fixed it for you.

I had a similar issue when I installed a new graphics card (or, rather, an old in-the-package card that had never been used) during my stay as one of the DMs on Modern Zombie Survival. The DM client worked just fine, but the Multiplayer client kept crashing on log-in, regardless of which server I was trying to get onto. So I updated my drivers and all was well.

It was weird. Maybe the Multiplayer client's more demanding than the DM client in some way.

But Numos figured out what the issue was. You may want to re-update your drivers anyway, though. emoticon

On a related note...

I've been through that [sign in to see URL] both ends. emoticon

One of the other casualties in the Master Server's death was the loss of the Buddy List function, and a useful function it was. On MZS, we had a real bastard of a problem player named Jerank, who thought he was an awesome master hacker, but all he ever really did was edit his client's .2da files and exploit server vulnerabilities to import a bunch of overpowered "god items" onto the server in question. We got to permaban him off of MZS more than once and, spiteful little bastard that he was, he'd create a new account, generate a set of new CD Keys and come right back. We had a sort of "Jerank scalp hunt" topic in the DM forums to see which one of us could hit him with the most permabans. emoticon

So then, Jerank figured that he'd stalk me through his Buddy List and show up on the Pirate Isles server while I was piddling around with my high-level Cleric of Umberlee, then he shot me a Tell and logged, just trying to scare me and make me think that he was some kind of terrifying, omniscient hacker [sign in to see URL] if I didn't know that Buddy Lists existed. Little did he suspect that I had six of his alt accounts on my Buddy List (including his original Jerank account), and I was just tracking the hell out of him and taking notes on which servers he [sign in to see URL] porny Social servers, like I mentioned to Numos in PM Land.

So then a day or three later, the Master Server dies (coincidentally [sign in to see URL] perhaps not, if Jerank was eavesdropping on whichever clandestine hacker circle brought the Master Server down). I was over on Pirate Isles, with Dorkling (the Head DM at the time) finishing up an event. I logged off to take a short break. Then I tried logging back on, but the server said that my account was already in use. Eventually I got through to find that my Cleric was standing next to a trash can, at about half her Hit Points and stripped of most of her items. Someone had hijacked my Cleric during that interim and was trying to trash all her items and get her killed when Dorkling kicked him off the server, thus allowing me to log back on again. Dorkling and I then swapped questions and answers, and it didn't take us long to figure out that it was Jerank who had hijacked my account, in his self-righteous endeavor to get some petty revenge for all of his well-deserved permabans on MZS.

Well, Jerank also didn't suspect that 1) Dorkling and I were and still are good buddies, and 2) I habitually Save Character before I log off, in case of rollbacks and sudden Server Vault deaths. So I sent my Cleric's latest .bic file up to Dorkling, he loaded it into his server vault (while permabanning the hell out of Jerank and all of his alt accounts, at my advisory) and suddenly it was like Jerank had never even touched my Cleric at all.

But that wasn't enough, oh no; holy retribution was a-coming. So I got a few of the DMs and ex-DMs on MZS, they rallied up their friends and a few other DMs on other servers which had had problems with Jerank, I fed them all the list of Jerank's alt accounts and favorite servers, and lo, we hunted down Jerank's entire army of characters (half of them black-haired male drow elves, the other half redheaded shemales with big boobs, long willies or both) and descended on them with the fury of a thousand trolls. And only one of Jerank's favorite servers employed supplemental security measures to foil account hijackers, but it was user-activated (and Jerank hadn't done so), so our wrath was great and terrible indeed. All of his characters' god items? Either trashed, sold or handed off to other players who hated his guts (which was most of them). All of his Gold? Ditto. All of his leveled-up characters? Repeatedly killed or de-Leveled (wherever the option was available). Nasty notes? Written and left in his characters' inventories (again, wherever we had the option). And that one server had a CD-Key-based security feature which Jerank had never bothered to [sign in to see URL] I logged on with most of his accounts, locked them to my CD Key and locked him out of the server until DM Tzeentch kicked me off his server and permabanned me in turn. Works for me; Tzeentch is a childish prick and I hate that server anyway. (And I doubt that Tzeentch was smart enough to undo what I had done, so pike off, Jerank. Your characters belong to me now. :P )

So after about two solid weeks of that punishment, Jerank finally stopped rerolling his characters, releveling his characters and importing his god items. So I reckon that he gave up, at which point our Operation: Kill Jerank task force cracked open the beers and went back to our regular playtime routines. It's not like Jerank could counter-retaliate against us in kind; he doesn't have any friends. He's just too much of a sociopathic jerk to make friends, let alone keep them. He's absolutely magnificent when it comes to making enemies, though.

The moral of the story: Don't be a sociopathic jerk, and don't hassle DMs when they're playerside. Hell hath no fury. >:]

And if I'm going to have a 100th post, it might as well be this one. Huzzah! emoticon

Re: Server Direct Connect

And if I might interject something related to Direct Connect, those of you unfamiliar with it might try the real Direct Connect (which is to say, logging onto Andrune directly from your Desktop).

If you're running Windows Vista or an earlier version, just click the Start button (in the lower left corner, unless you futzed around with the desktop display options) and Copy-Paste the following into the Run command:

"C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\[sign in to see URL]" +connect [sign in to see URL]

(Be sure to change that hard drive designation if your Neverwinter Nights installation is located on a drive other than your C:\ drive. My copy of NWN is installed on my M:\ drive, so the line I use goes like "M:\NeverwinterNights\et cetera, et cetera, et cetera".)

"But Wids, I'm running Windows 7! Where's my Run command?"

Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, disabled the Run command in Windows 7 by [sign in to see URL], but, fortunately, not removed. Apparently it was one more flex of their overarching philosophy that all of us users are absolute morons, so our good shepherds at Microsoft should take away as many of our tinkering tools as possible, lest we break something. Giving us opportunities to actually learn about the nuts and bolts inside these wonderful devices which have enriched so many of our lives is hardly a concern to our lords and masters at Microsoft. But I digress.

So here's how you undo Microsoft's insult to our collective intelligence and enable the Run command in Windows 7:

1) Click the Start button.
2) Click Control Panel.
3) Click Appearance and Personalization.
4) Click Taskbar and Start Menu.
5) Click the Start Menu tab, and then click Customize.
6) Go down the list of Start Menu options until you find Run Command. Click the little check box.
7) Click OK.

You're done! Just look for the Run... command in the right column of your Start Menu. Click it, Paste the above command into the command line entry and OK it. And away you go.

You can do this with multiple servers, in case Andrune isn't your only home. Once you've entered a server's IP and Port into the command above, you can reload the command at any time by clicking the Run Command's down arrow (at the end of the command line entry) and choosing the appropriate command from the drop-down list.

Happy expedient gaming! emoticon
