The Barghest

The farmers and fishermen of Moonveil have, for many years, lived in quiet fear of the beastmen and fey who stalked forests. Once upon a time there was a great war between man and sidhe until an edict was made by the Great Wolf, Erular: As long as man did not hunt or clear forest, the beasts of the wood would do him no harm. But the Great Wolf has since been slain by the dragon Ebarius.

Rumors slowly begin to surface of mauled remains found along roads through the region; and the young people of New Rivenmaur stolen away by the werewolves to be changed.

Martin Darby, a soldier-turned-farmer, claims to have spoken with a beast who calls itself the Barghest and claims rulership over the wood and werewolves within. According to Darby has demanded a tribute of a single villager on the eve of summer and winter - in return New Rivenmaur would be let alone.

With the blessing of Lord Jonalith Darby was said to have rounded up the nearby farmers and held a lottery to decide who would be offered to the Barghest.

News of New Rivenmaur's horrific lottery quickly spread after the would-be sacrifice was rescued by some unknown persons.

Sir John Corwin, younger brother of the Emperor's late champion, is said to have lead a small troupe of soldiers to New Rivenmaur. There they repelled a vicious assault by the beastmen - rumored to be in retaliation for the village's failure to provide a suitable sacrifice.

Word begins to circulate a pack of orcs, lead by a fearsome horned ogre, was seen leading a large number of captives through the Stormcrests and down to Moonveil. The giant was slain, and the captives freed by imperial-backed mercenaries. Lord-Captain insists that the Tu'atha are growing desperate, and have turned to buying slaves to supplement their ranks with more werewolves, heralding the empire's victory in the region as imminent...

Following months of a long stale-mate between imperial and Tu'athan forces in Moonveil, news begins to circulate that someone had developed a potent toxin designed to ravenous shapeshifters. Much to the disappointment of locals it seems there is a leak in imperial intelligence - knowledge of the toxin had passed to the elves. One can only assume they are hastily working to devise an inoculation for their champion and his pack.

Very recently a large force of Librarians marched on new Rivenmaur, along with a contingent of Iron Golems, and met with mixed relief and dismay by the local populace - pondering why the wizards had not sooner intervened in their plight.

Some days later they left the village, the large force making their way toward the heart of the forest...

"Because the commonfolk o' New Rivenmaur have suffered his ire for o'er lang, Hinnie-Blob. An' because I was with Ronan an' Melinda at the beginnin' o' this fasherie, an' I shall see it to its end."

Golden faerie dust snowed onto her rumpled witch hat and tumbled down the brim as the pixie dragon settled onto an overhead bough and folded her gossamer wings over her flanks. The dragonling's reply came less as words and more as yelping and tittering, but Braweann understood it all the same.

"Aye, that I ken. Arkady has tald me much o' the Feywilds, yet I have trodden them but once. I may need to walk them again. But how to find the Librarians an' stay them from takin' Erular's [sign in to see URL], I ken not. But what manner o' witch would I be if cursed with a snoovin' wit, hmm?"

A slender, emerald tail thumped the branch overhead, underscoring the tiny dragon's murmur of warning.

"O' course! Sure they yet hunt me, an' Sutharan himself would leave me as a fine ash for malafoosterin' his plans. But first, they would need to catch me."

Her confident smile sobered into nothingness, leaving naught but her narrowing, defiant eyes to address the drifting heavens.

"For the greater good--an' at Elder Dunhain's behest--have I defied Andrune afore. An' for the greater good, I shall do it [sign in to see URL], Modron willin', for a thoosand times ayond that.

"Besides, the Barghest's grip on Melinda cannae be broken save with his unmakin'. An' Ronan tald me that his sword is noo pledged to John Corwin; I fear that he disnae see the whole o' what danger he courts, an' his honor an' his honesty shall play endweys into the Library's hands."

Her head pitched forward as she rose to stand, sending the shimmering fey dust pouring from her broad-brimmed hat and cascading over her eyes. So amused, her wily grin returned.

"So they are gettin' my help, Hinnie. An' they are gettin' it whether they wish it or not."

// Braweann's in for either tonight or tomorrow. Since she is part of the plot to stop the Library from taking the Barghest's power and/or Erular's power for themselves, she will not be giving notice of her intentions to John Corwin or to anyone else connected to Andrune's government and/or the Library in particular. (Yes, Yvette, that means you too. emoticon )

Rumors soon begin to circulate that a group of adventurers lead by Constable Isania Jalitana of Bodkin, Seeker Yvette of the Imperial Library, and Wilgold Laughshield of businessman of New Rivenmaur journeyed into the feywilds to hunt the Barghest.

Ensuing was a long and bloody battle against beastman, Tu'athan elf, and unseelie faerie - but the Werewolf Lord was felled.

As the people of New Rivenmaur celebrate their freedom from the Barghest's menace, the people of Avendel experience a series of tremors from the underworks below - the ancient machine acting up much more than usual...

Rumors soon circulate of a deadly raid, by tribals and savages, upon a camp the Imperial Library has set up in the fey-wilds - allegedly for arcane experimentation. The exact details are unknown but it was presumably to free the trapped spirit of the recently defeated Barghest.

The details are muddled and hazy, but Grand Magister Sutharan is confirmed to be dead.

On the same evening violent earthquakes shook Avendel as the Underworks, the vast machine beneath the city, began to behave in an unpredictable manner. Jets of stream and berserk golems streamed into the streets, and hungry slaadi raided the Promenade eager to feast on the excess magic. Many of the city's older districts were soon evacuated.

...Meanwhile curious feylights are seen dancing about Moonveil forest, gleefully...

Amidst the death and destruction caused by the earthquakes, slaadi and golems, a few heroes arose. Many of those within the chaos in the Promenade spoke of a stern woman known as Vera and her crew, a handsome young man, a brightly dressed hillswoman, a fiery haired elf and a softspoken wizardess. It's said often that without their aid, many more would have perished that day.
