I'd prefer to start from scratch with a clear head where I don't need to worry about updating or sprucing up old and irrelevant content.

My big question on this is; are you looking for us to play all new characters?

Oh god no. I don't care who you play. That's your business so long as its not disruptive.

I Just dont like having to work around out-dated areas and a geography that doesn't really work. Ancients' Rise can go, for example, and there doesn't need to be four areas between new Rivenmaur and Avendel. There can be 1-2 highly detailed areas that scream "Oh look, werewolves!" "Elemental-filled lake!" and within those areas there might be a wolf den where you'll meet the ghost of a militiaman from old Rivenmaur who gives you a quest to save his friend from Shadowpine Deeps. Or a wrecked caravan roughed up by Lord Jonalith's thugs.

These changes can certainly be made in baby steps but I'd prefer one big facelift.

It might be baby steps simply due to the limited time builders have, but I should have some toolset time soon enough.

It has been. We can keep running the current mod as is, of course, but if we end up doing a total revamp of the server I'd hope for a more finished product. What I essentially want to do is eventually find a GOOD BREAK POINT and maybe advance the timeline 2-3 years so the more long-term ramifications of plots can be made visible. Plus we'll have a newer, fresher module at our disposal.

So if the players capture Asheland, fail to stop Darrach, and inadvertently help Whiston with some scheme... when this next incarnation of the module gets pushed out you might find that Asheland is now a thriving settlement, but forced to pay tribute to Darrach to protect them from Whiston. Something to that effect.

Anyway I think our discussion's gotten a little bit derailed.

What I want to accomplish is a facelift of the module. I want to eliminate some of the needless sprawl, and create a module that might be geographically a little smaller but with a much higher level of detail.

I want to gauge people's interest in building areas that expand on what we aleady have: A Firbolg Barrow along the Emain, stirge cavern in bodkin's well, a farm on the road to bodkin, etc.

I am also looking for opinions on our hak situation. Like I said I see a lot of people who try to log in and don't have the correct haks. Way more than random new people we get who never return. I personally think that with effort core NWN can still be aesthetically pleasing. But we have a ton of very nice areas made with haks. I don't want anyone's hard work going to waste, and creating needless work by requiring rebuilds of other areas.

I am very for a facelift of the server. I don't have a lot of experience with the toolset or building, but I really want to help build the new module. I have some ideas for new stuff, but they are half-baked at the moment.

I am for new haks. And I think if we advertise in the server details that we are one of the best roleplay servers, but you need a few haks to play; we will get new players. However,we would get less than if we went hakless.

I'm willing to help write npc conversation and build new stuff, I just need some practice. I'm going to be busy after the summer, so I may have less time. But I will still try to help out as much as possible.

Re: Andrune v2

Necro-bump, but I just got here so sue me, huh?

I'm somewhat disheartened to see the servers head admin was considering the servers demise months before I arrived. I have to say thus far I have been awed at the servers atmosphere and area design, but that could be just me speaking with glassy eyed admiration. I've been seeking a server like this for a long time, and believe me I've probably tried most of the english language servers available since the years in which the first roleplay persistant world I fell in love with was shut down. I wish I had tried Andrune a lot sooner than I did. I think I avoided it for being in proximity to Amia and Arelith on the server listing emoticon

Your server, while not vastly populated at the moment, is a look at how story-driven, character-development central worlds should feel. I'd long been lamenting the state of servers these days. However, I'll say this of a rebuild; I can understand that the rest of you have seen all these areas a million times by now, so they may have lost their gloss in your eyes. To fresh eyes, they're wonderful. I would back any rebuilding effort you want to undertake, so long as it comes to rival the obvious quality of Andrune as it is today, though my own developing skills are a little rusty these days.

Concerning haks, I wouldn't recommend a server go hakless. If, by now, a NWN player doesn't understand how to download and install a hak, they are a newb and should lurk more. CEP is a staple and I'd even support the inclusion of the PRC. I'd be wary of adding much more beyond that though, the more you add the more unlikely it is you're going to survive in the long run. As you say, you can still achieve some aesthetically pleasing areas with core NWN, just not as pretty as some of the updated tilesets. I'm undecided as to whether they're worth it, or necessary. I know it's silly, but some potential players are, as observed, put off by the prospect of a few downloads for some reason. Conversely, my hak folder recently reached 30gb emoticon

A lot of servers have complex craft mechanics where you spend as much time fighting monsters as you do mining and chopping trees so you can fail to make things repeatedly, or scripts that require you to carry vast amounts of food, water and bedrolls to survive - these I find to be tiresome inclusions that have little place in a real rp server populated by a mature story-orientated community. I am at least curious regarding which haks you were considering though.

One thing I can suggest to help keep servers from feeling stagnant is to encourage a player-driven dynamic while also having DMs do their plots of choice. So you're high level, you're known for your heroism throughout the land and you're sitting on a mountain of gold with no new gear to buy, what do you do? You throw heaps of gold into construction and build yourself a fort, raise an army and shake things up some. You create a merc guild in your favourite city for all those thugs and miscreants looking for work, or you forge an alliance with the local lord and build a wizarding academy, whatever's to your tastes. Inspire some abition and forethought! Often just rolling with a players own ideas will give you plenty of rp fodder to play with as the world morphs around these powerful entities, each persuing their own goals while at the same time experiencing the settings story arcs that the DMs want to develop. They basically blunder into conflict with the existing power structures of their environment and choose to conquer, submit or co-exist. It helps mitigate the 'level 25 werewolf living in a rundown shack at the edge of a small town' feeling that was mentioned. And that's not a dig at whoever that was referring to, I just got here and have no idea who that's about, if anyone, I was just calling on it as an example of high level characters lingering in a stagnant environment that doesn't really reflect their power.

Not to mention that I keep hearing about a civil war from NPCs in game, why can't players choose sides and push a higher agenda, if they aren't ambitious enough to forge a destiny of their own?

This is turning into an unexpected essay on the state of NWN and it's rp servers, so I'm going to stop here, but do say so if I'm -waaaay- too late to be throwing my hat into this discussion; I'm just entralled with your server and think the people behind it have done a lot of things right that so many others have failed to grasp when it comes to creating rp worlds. I would hate to see such talent fade into obscurity, or fail to enjoy their own wonderful creation emoticon

Some really great comments and lots of food for thought. Its great to see new faces excited and engaging with our little patch.

One of the things I strongly agree with you on is PC activity. I'm a big fan of characters having goals, but I really think the goals should change over time as they are achieved or forgotten.

Owning A shop = a good lower level goal
Owning an Empire Wide (Evil) business Empire = a good epic level goal
