Sleeping Horror

(( Okay folks, first post on this is OOC. Here's the deal- I'm starting a plot very soon but the plot itself actually kicks off in the heads of your characters.

If you want to be involved, you need to sign up here with a character to get in on the story. Then I will then write them a personalized recurring nightmare. How they react to the nightmare or how long it reoccurs will be entirely your choice. These nightmares will predate (and tie into) in game events.

A few rules:

1) Only one character per person.
2) Level is not an issue by any means. I will prepare for a wide range or very high level characters.
3) The character you choose is best a long term and well fleshed out character. Short term or grinding characters make it tough for me to personalize the fears and nightmares I throw at them.

Re, Elves:
Since most full blooded elves do not tend to 'sleep' but trance, you can assume the dream comes in a trance.

Anyway, I'll likely keep up this part for the duration of the event in case anyone wants to enter late.

*kicks off*

Edit
Dream Listings:

Finished
Seager
Phaeron
Nurl
Kedri
Emer
Aereon
Elluir (done in game)

Seager

A bathtub had been a good investment.

A really good investment.

Running the Heartbreaker wasn’t all whores and cigars, so a moment of relaxation was well earned and damned be to the various problem-people upstairs- you had bouncers for a reason. Right now, all that mattered was you, and the tub full of warm water. You test it with your fingertips to make sure the temperature is right before disrobing.

You don’t feel particularly narcissistic today, the large mirror in the corner doesn’t catch your eye. You slip into the brass tub and sink into the embrace of the water. It’s deep enough to reach your shoulders and the steam fogs up your vision. The noise from above is dampened to a muffled chorus of joy and drink.

...Drink. Right.

Beside the tub you’d left a bottle of Bourbon. Too comfortable to move and retrieve ice, you pull the cork and take a swig from inside the luxury of your bath. It almost feels like a sin to drink it this way, feeling the burn slide down your throat. It warms you from the inside the way the water can’t, and you replace it (albeit a little more wet) back onto the nearby stool. !@#$ the world, you’re a dashing man in a bathtub with your Bourbon.

You lick your lips, very briefly you taste something coppery, like blood. You wipe your mouth with your arm, but there’s nothing there. Maybe it was just the glass from the bottle you just drank. You push the thought from your mind and sink further into the tub, until the water is level with your lips. It’s so comfortable, and the lower you are, the less you hear the ruckus upstairs. You keep going down, submerging yourself and closing your eyes- it’s the most comfortable and free you’ve felt in weeks.

You remember after a few moments that you require air to breathe, you open your eyes and tell your body to lean up and resurface.

You don’t move. Your eyes dart about their sockets, and over the edge of the bathtub the mirror is moving with dark shapes. You try to reach for the edge to pull yourself out, but for some reason while it feels like your brain is going through the motions, your body isn’t.

You begin to full on panic, bubbles rush out of your nose and mouth, rising to the surface, carrying your only plea for help and the precious air that had been left in your lungs. You keep screaming in your head, telling your body to move. The longer you fight, the more weak you feel.

As you sink to the bottom of the tub, the darkness from the mirror slips across the room an envelops you.

No more bubbles rise to the surface.

Phaeron

Your chariot cannot carry you fast enough to your destination, the four horses pulling it being whipped to their all out gallop. You normally would not push your steeds this hard, but you have every urgent reason to return home to your budding, Firbolg kingdom.

Your heir is being born.

It had been desperately important matters that had pulled you away when your wife was so heavy with child, but luckily childbirth was a universally understood matter. The diplomatic talks had been suddenly put on hold when word had arrived by hawk that your queen had gone into labor.

You feel a mixture of excitement and fear as you round the corner and come down the pass towards your keep. The warhounds stalking the edges begin to bark and case a fuss, but no one dares stand in your way when you dismount and begin rushing through the gates.

The furs you wear billow behind you, your hand rests casually on an ornate longsword at your hip, and the crown weighs heavily on your head. Even in this state of tension and anticipation, you are as much a king as ever. The people around you look on you with reverence and loyalty, you are both their leader and protector. It warms you to see things going so well, even if you’ve little time to dwell on the details.

As you near your chambers where no doubt Isania is with midwife, you hear screams.

At first you cringe and think them the screams of a laboring, birthing woman, but the pitch, the primal sound... it’s wrong. There is commotion that seems to grow louder, crashing and yelling. You can’t make out the words, but it doesn’t matter. You’re in a full on run. Something is wrong. Something is very wrong.

You throw open the door, and what lies before you is an image you wish you could someday forget.

You had always known birthing was a messy business, there was plenty of blood. Your wife lay back, screaming and sobbing, clawing weakly at the sheets while a man you trusted as an advisor holds her down. He has tension in his eyes. The midwife has her sleeves rolled up, apron and hands stained with the blood of the afterbirth.

And there is a small... monster. A strange, deformed, furred creature laying at the foot of the bed. A newborn, with a snout and a horribly deformed body. Something between a baby and a pup. It’s eyes are closed, but there’s a stillness to the body and a way the mouth is agape that chills your blood. Only then do you see the midwife cleaning a blade hidden away in her apron.

They are all yelling, your head is swimming, you can’t make them all out at once.

“... is a whore, look at the beast she created!...”
“Likely slept with one of the dogs!”
“...or a tuathan monster, her elven blood should have been warning!”

You begin to try and protest, to stop this madness before it grows worse. The gathered people don’t even seem to notice you’re there even as you yell. One has thrown the body of the infant from the bed to clear the path for the midwife, who is stalking towards Isania with blade in hand.

You catch her reflection in the mirror, a terrible malicious dark shape. You try to move, to get there quick enough to stop what you know is about to happen.

You don’t move quick enough and another life is taken.

Nurl

It’s a quiet evening in Bodkin. You’ve just made sure all your deputies were settled on their duty hours and that all is fine in Hoppers. Most people are going to bed, but for some reason you don’t feel sleepy.

You find some quiet in the armory. There are papers scattered about the desk with various business you don’t really understand or care to understand. Who knew a town this small could produce so much paperwork?

The saving grace of the armory though, will always be the stash of ale beneath the desk. A swift kick to the side can reveal the door where several lovely bottles of ale are hidden within. Uncorking one, you kick your boots up onto the desk and lean back.

You briefly notice a mirror in the corner- which is strange because it surely hadn't been there the day before. You make a mental note to scold whoever is using he armory for their personal storage but you’ve got a feeling it might be Jamie trying to hide a surprise present for his wife.

You chuckle past your pale beard, drinking whatever it was you selected. Jamie was a good lad, you thought. You close your eyes, thinking of your sons, briefly wondering what they might be up to. You then sniff deep, as the sudden smell of something feted and rotten fills the armory. Worse than moldy food, it was almost choking.

You open your eyes and instantly drop your feet to the ground at the sight before you.

Greasy hair matted with blood and mold, sunken eyes and green tinted, leathery skin. She wears a white, torn robe and stands with all the poise and pride she once had. Blood pours continually from the wound where you know she had been stabbed. Where she’d received the fatal wound. Her fingers twitch, nails yellow and cracked.

“Tindra.” You croak, unable to form any other words.

She only lifts a finger, pointing at you. Her head cocks to one side, exposed, crushed eye rolling to look at you.
“You left me behind.” She accuses.

“I did’na, I d-” You stutter.

“YOU LEFT ME TO DIE!” She shrieks.

You look about the room, desperate for a reason to think this as a drunken vision. You see the mirror, and her reflection. A terrible, taller, dark figure with a white, expressionless mask.

“You left me to die.” She hisses again. “And now I am going to repay the favor.”

Re: Sleeping Horror

Kedri

Morag is complaining, holding up a trap with a dead rat in it, bemoaning that she is being forced to dispose of it and not you. But it’s her turn, you did the last one.

Since you’d opened your shop rats seemed to be a strangely common issue. You didn’t think you’d need to invest in so many traps. It had started as one, then two, and now nearly four a day that you dispose of in a hole out back. Your little rat-graveyard is getting pretty big. Morag goes out the door to visit that graveyard, returning with the trap and a disgusted look.

“Boss, how many more until we’ve killed all the rats in town?” She keeps asking. You keep telling her you don’t know. You shrug, just as strung out and annoyed as she is- but at least keeping your mouth shut about it.

You head into the back, sitting down to look over orders, it’s not long before night falls and several more rats have been put into the grave. Morag goes home, but you keep a candle going to work on some papers.

Thud.

Late into the evening you look up at the noise. It is like someone is banging on a wall or door.

Thud.

You look around you, slightly tense. With only one candle lit the shadows flicker around the room and what little light you have is only reflected by a mirror in the corner, causing it to look particularly sinister.

Thud. Thud THUD.

The noise is coming faster now. You tilt your head and listen- it sounds like it’s coming from the front door. It’s pretty loud for knocking, but maybe it’s someone drunk.

You rise from your chair, picking up a lamp and lighting it. There is a particular brilliance, or perhaps horror to the way your shop looks when it’s dark. The shadows of crystals and dangling charms, magical items humming with their dormant energy.

THUD.

You yell for the person behind the door to hold up, let them know that you’re on your way. There are several locks to get through, and you can-

THUD

-clearly feel the pounding on the door now. Eventually the last long gives way and you open the door.

Immediately you regret doing so.

Like a tide of fur and claws, rats come pouring in as if they were one sentient wave. Thousands upon thousands, so many that they overwhelm you and send you onto your back. Your lamp is knocked from your hands and the candle is extinguished. You can feel their teeth and nails digging into you, swarming you. When you try to scream their disgusting little faces shove between your teeth to silence you and tear at your tongue and gums.

You can do nothing but thrash as you are eaten alive.
