I shot the sheriff...

The grizzly Captain Fluellen, fresh from his night watch, lumbers into Hoppers Hole. Setting his sword and bow upon the weapon rack he travels to a table where the young hero Phaeron Dax sits. The old veteran grins at the young one and orders a drink

" Hello Dax, You got time to talk a little business?"

Phaeron takes a long deep drink from his dark ale and wipes his mouth crudely on his forearm before turning his hazel eyes lazily to captain Fluellan.

"Mornin' cap'n.. was just finishin' m'breakfast...what's on yer mind?"

The old captain studies the young man for a moment. Of course Fluellen was no longer a real captain, he was only constable of the village. The title of captain had been long ago shed away when he retired from the army, but the village folk still affectionately applied it.

" I'm getting old Dax."

Fluellen rests his hands upon the table. The joints of which are gnarled from years of use and the changing of the seasons. His voice is lowered now as he leans closer to the young soldier.

" I cant draw a bow anymore. Haven't been able to for near 6 seasons. And holding a sword is beginning to become difficult as well. My minds still as nimble as ever but my body is beginning to fail me Dax. I wont be able to be constable much longer."

Fluellen sighs and continues.

" You've met my deputies of course. Jamie the gods bless him, is too sweet and trusting of a lad. Then there's MacMorris who will just as soon hang a man as question him. They're good men, but none of them would make a good constable. But then there is you Dax. You were a soldier once, you know the emperors law yet aint afraid to bend it for the good of folks. You're clever and you're well liked by the town. Dax, I want to offer you a position of the village watch. Your title would be deputy for now, but as far as I'm concerned you'd the next constable. Id be granting you the freedom to act as such until I retire and your position become official. Would you be wanting that Dax?"

Phaeron quirks a brow looking over the aging captain a moment and scratches his chin in thought. "Constable mm?" it had been many a year since he was corporal of the librarian Guard, years since he left that burning village behind and fled from the empires wrath.

"y'know captain...i think i might take you up on that. i've spent too many years on th' road, and i'm tired of runnin'." he slides his empty mug of ale to the center of the table and takes a bite from the slice of stale bread nearby, leaning back lazily in his chair.

He nods once more to the captain and purses his lips. " i am at your service."
