A Drink with Gloen Pondborough

Cowled in his usual dusty black, a hooded man who'd grown too infamous for his liking as of late, sat at one of the small tables flanking the bar. He smiled to himself and took a sip of whiskey. Every so often the man's attention would travel which he'd pat every so often... as though worried it's contents would vanish in thin air.

Once more, he glanced up from his drink and toward the inn's double-doors, awaiting someone.

Gloen sucked on his unlit pipe as he scanned the book once more. Materials alone, the thing would fetch a fine price but the strange text within it made his feet itch. There was something more to this. Mysterious folk didn't fork out the coin to hire someone like him just to fetch a plain, run-of-the-mill, golden book. A scribe or loremaster was need. He'd have to choose wisely. Vanyette's departure was becoming more and more inconvenient.

Time was short - a few days max. The hin knew his employer would be suspicious if he didn't deliver on time. Gloen grinned around his pipe stem. Well he'd be suspicious regardless. 'Master treasure finders' don't get to their stations by blindly following orders...

Looking annoyed, Vardas slipped from the tavern as quickly and quietly as he had entered it. Perhaps Gloen was dead, or had double-crossed him and found another buyer. He hoped the hin didn't realize the tome's true value. But perhaps he'd seen something in that monastery that... could have tipped him off.

The assassin felt quite at home darting through the packed streets of Avendel. There was something vaguely comforting to the anonymity. It occurred to him that a bounty on the hin would serve no purpose. He'd only allow himself to be found if he wanted to be. And he couldn't be arrested for not selling the book, regardless.

The assassin continued to mull over the question of how to acquire the valuable text, as he vanished from sight, not a single onlooking noticing his absence.
