Andrune: Major Events and Rumors

(The purpose of this thread is for DMs to post and catalog storylines; and for PCs to get some sense of current events and gossip. For the most part everything posted here should be considered in-character knowledge so long as your PC generally frequents Avendel.

Preferably, only DMs should be making posts here.)

The Spellplague

On the 29th of Tarsakh, 1385 D.R., terrible blue fire streaks across the skies of Faerun in an apocalyptic aurora. The world is rocked by earthquakes and tidal surges, and wondrous acts of magic and alchemy soon go awry. Word soon spreads of a terrible prophecy toretold by Yaphyll, the Thayan Zulkiir of Divination.

The people of the Andrune are uneasy at the news, but grateful the archipelago was spared this terrible apocalypse. Some are quick to point out the isle is ripe for invasion... but the Church of the Exile is quick to counter that Aarus Merovin foresaw this event - and the Church and Library both have long prepared for these tumultuous times.

Nonetheless, a terrible aurora of blue and silver burns on the horizon. Not too soon after... boat-loads of refugees from Athkatla, Baldur's Gate, and Calimport begin to arrive in Avendel's harbor.

Many of the new refugees from afar have taken refuge in the Amnish enclave under care of Lady Inez Alhambra, the envoy of the merchant-nation.

As of late, however, Lady Inez has been preoccupied: five Amnish ships scheduled to deliver both goods and supplies alike have gone missing on the rough seas. One such boat was located, though the crew were allegedly transformed into the walking dead. The Ambassador has placed a 10,000 Crown bounty on the recovery of her nation's lost vessels.

Re: Andrune: Major Events and Rumors

Word begins to spread among Avendelians that the Orchard Tender, a benevolent faerie often in the guise of the boy Llewellyn, had been captured by the Library. Apparently he was to be enslaved in order to fuel the golems developed by the sinister Magister Fettik. The fey was freed by several bystanders who fled into a portal - but has not been seen since, and the boons he bestowed upon local crops have disappeared.

Discontent toward the Library begins to grow. Although fey and wildlings have done much to harm the common good in the past, locals begin ponder why the Magister would harm such a peaceful and innocent creature.

Re: Andrune: Major Events and Rumors

Aarus Merovin gathered together his council of Barons, and the Lords, merchants, and scholars of Avendel. There a witness to Magister Fettik's murders, Vera Smith, was questioned before many witnesses. They seemed sympathetic to the plight of the spirit, and fallen Magister Belinus.

He then began his speech...

"Honored citizens and defenders of Avendel, and esteemed guests from afar, you are all no doubt aware that a storm rages on distant shores. On the 29th of Tarsakh Mystra, goddess of magic, fell silent and the leylines have Toril have begun to unravel. The arcane power wizards once commanded with ease now ravages the land, unchecked, and untamed.

This has happened twice before in the history of the world. Once when Karsus slew Mystryl in a misguided attempt to save Old Netheril. And again when wicked, wicked Helm struck down Mystra during the time of troubles. It took years for wizards to once again reign in the weave’s power.

My ancestor, Aarus of Netheril, saw this would happen three times. He swore never again would the petty games of gods bring death and misery to man. The stars guided him to this place, to this temple-city built by the Witch-Kings and Fomorians of old, to create a sanctuary from the coming storm. A place where men would be free of gods and their games.

I, and my trusted advisors, will soon go forth into Toril to heal its wounds and bring the Exile’s vision to life. It is with a heavy heart I do this, as I am loath to leave you. In my stead I wish my loyal advisor, Baron Gilgamesh Corwin, to rule Avendel - and to welcome any and all who seek refuge here.

It is also with great sadness that I must address another matter. The Imperial Library was founded centuries ago as a meeting of the greatest minds of the Empire: wizards and scholars who would elevate us to new heights with their science and wisdom. Despite their efforts to bring about the Exile’s vision, a vile taint has grown within them.

Magister Fettik’s cruel attempts to capture and enslave the kind and peaceful Orchard-tender, Ilygoden, is a prime example of this corruption. I have gathered together my most trusted Magisters and it has been agreed that the Library, and its military efforts, are to be disbanded. In its place The Seekers of Truth will serve our Empire, but as teachers and scholars, not as conquerors. Magisters Blacktooth, Tanelee, and Tanaquil shall oversee this effort."

Enraged at the Library's disbandment, several Librarians attacked the Emperor with summoned monsters and fled into their tower. Avendel has since erupted into civil war: the Empire's ancient nobility imposing heavy-handed rule to maintain order. Many more citizens than expected rally to the Library's aid, ever-loyal for the allure of medicine, education, and arcana.

Rumors begin to circulate of a divide forming admist the Librarians barricaded inside the Spire. Some willing to end the strife in exchange for assurance they will not be brought to justice for defiance of the Emperor's Edict. Citizens are nonetheless uneasily, as eldritch lights begin to flicker from atop the Spire - the rogue magisters evidently preparing for something.

Meanwhile, crops continue to mysteriously rot. Many blame Fettik's capture of the orchard tender. If this continues, a famine is sure to begin.

Like the decay of the crops, people have started to notice rot encroaching on their bodies. A new disease, one characterized by the decomposition of first fingers and toes, then hands and feet and perhaps soon entire limbs. At the moment, numerous cases are being reported and gossiped about, though few are actually confirmed.

Between this and the looming threat of famine, tension is steadily rising...

Re: Andrune: Major Events and Rumors

A violent confrontation took place in the Promenade between several Tethyrian refugees, and Imperial Guardsmen. The refugees attempted to access the Underworks. They claimed the machinery beneath Avendel contained vast fungal farms to provide food in the event of siege - and that preference was being given to Andrunese citizens in its distribution.

The guardsmen, however, claimed nothing could be done so long as Spire was held by rogue magi. Two men were killed when they attempted to swarm into the Underworks.

Several deputies of the Imperial Guard, along with a group of mercenaries and concerned citizens, entered the Spire in a bid to parley with the Librarian-defectors. The group emerged several hours later with claims an accord was struck. Commander Carshall, and the Librarians and Seekers in his entourage, agreed to aid Imperial forces against the invading Shadovar in exchange for absolution from their earlier betrayal.

This came as relief to much of Avendel's populace. Work has already begun to repair parts of the Underworks and machinery destroyed or sabotaged during the infighting... and efforts have begun to access emergency food stores.

Word also spreads of the horrors unleashed by the Shadovar within... Of a terrible golem crafted of molten flesh and blood. The abomination was repelled by the heroes, but not destoyed. Nonetheless, it appears the downfall of the shadocar invaders has begun.

Werewolves in the Farms

Word spreads fast that the beastmen have been sighted on farms. Farmers who can rush to buy weapons, farmers who can't rally to have the roads and the farms patrolled with greater force.
