Sermon In The Streets

::It is mid-day on the Avendel Promenade. A good day, warm with a light breeze. Raguel enters the most populated area; his golden armor gleaming from a fresh coat of polish and he holds a banner of Torm that lightly whips in the breeze. He looks out to whomever he can see and begins his Sermon. His voice is commanding, but has a gentle tone.::

Brothers and Sisters hear me! I am Raguel, Advocate Cleric of the Order of the Golden Lion, servant of Torm. I have come to this city in its darkest hour to bring light!

::his tone changes to a solemn one::

I know many of you may feel disdain for Torm. I have heard many disturbing things that some have done in his name. But I tell you truly, it was NOT the will of Torm! But words are wind! So I have come to set things right, I have come to make amends for past transgressions!

Not more than a day after being in this fair city did I see an Abomination set upon it. I shed blood with many others on that day to drive the creature off. I tended the wounded and by the grace of Torm brought many back from the brink of deaths embrace! I tell you this not out of prideful boasting, but as evidence of my duty to uphold this city and bring justice to those who would do evil!

::his tone becomes one of hope and praise::

To those who are good people, honorable people, I tell you! The path of the righteous is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil doers. Blessed is he who, in the name of honor and justice, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for they are truly his brother's and sister's keeper and the finder of lost children!

::his voice fills with disdain and sternness::

To those wicked amongst us, here me! Your days of hiding in the shadows are over! I bring the light and justice of Torm and there is no dark corner of this realm you may flee to escape it! I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know his name is Torm when I lay my vengeance upon you!

::he takes a deep breath to calm himself and continues in a firm and inspiring manner::

I call upon those among you who feel that honor, justice, duty, and the defense of the weak are things of value! I call upon you to seek me out! We are on the BRINK brothers and sisters! The world around us crumbles! This is the last bastion of hope for the world and it must be one of light! I call upon you to rise up with me! RISE WITH ME TO DRIVE OUT THE DARKNESS! SEEK ME OUT! SEEK ME OUT THOSE WHO WISH TO UPHOLD THE WEAK AND WEARY! AND WE SHALL SUCCEED BY THE GRACE AND GLORY OF TORM!

::he raises the banner of Torm high, it flaps strongly in the wind and has an almost divine glow with the mid-day sun hitting it::

I BLESS THIS CITY IN THE NAME OF TORM! MAY IT STAND IN THE LIGHT FOREVER!

::he lowers his head and banner in a humble manner and speaks a quiet prayer.::

Re: Sermon In The Streets

A small crowd of people come together to observe Raguel. Most appear indifferent; in times such as these, would-be prophets and holy men were as common as the doomsayers. They chatter among themselves quietly throughout the sermon, their comments ranging from incredulous and skeptical to naive and hopeful. When Raguel's voice drops to quiet prayer, their conversations become louder, drowning out the sound of his words.

One among them, a fair-faced young man with short blonde hair, weaves his way through the others to approach Raguel. "Torm," the man echoes, a pleasant smile on his face, "is a liar and a monster unworthy of praise by any whom would claim to abide by justice." Some among the crowd are hushed by the challenge. A few youths laugh at the abruptness of it. The young man stretches out his arms and bows his head, a gesture of invitation directed at Raguel. Around his waist is a white and yellowish sash, a Tormtar tabard worn as a washcloth.

"Who holds the lord of justice accountable for his sins, hm? Who judges the judge? Verily, not his fellows of the Triad; they are in truth subservient. Not his angels, his other servants, who do not have the power to smite him down if need be." A few of the common people have wandered away, losing interest in the budding debate. A handful of others linger on, though they don't watch with any sincere investment. It would seem they simply want to see the two religious men fight in the street.

Unperturbed, the young man continues on, that smile ever painted on his face. "Do you recall the day, sir, when Torm came down to his followers and said to them, 'give to me your everlasting souls, that I may use them as ammunition to fight my own battle?' And blinded by their faith, these foolish people agreed. One does not deny a deity. Torm, using his influence, stole their souls because he, in his cowardice, could not face his rival on his merits alone."

With his peace said, the man lowers his arms to his sides again. He wears a commoner's attire, though a sword rests cordially on his belt. "My name is Camael. And this island, thankfully, is yet unstained by the scourge of false justice. I am here to keep it that way."

Re: Sermon In The Streets

Raguel patiently listens to the man. When Camael finishes speaking his words Raguel plants his banner firmly at his sides and points to the man. He speaks in a firm but calm voice.

"I thank you brother! For giving me the opportunity to speak to the deeds of Torm. For he was no mere deity born into the celestial heights. But a mortal man, a hero ascended by his deeds and honor. Do you forget that Torm battled Bane in the harbor of the city of Tantras during the Time of Troubles, destroying the Black Lord in personal combat? And in that sacrificed his very life to destroy Bane, saving Faerun from darkness!"

Raguel speaks Banes name with a strong disdain.

"You say Torm is a liar, but the only liar I see is the one who stands before me. For it is out of your ignorance you seem to speak. For those who truly know of Torm would know of his greatness and justice. You call him a monster, but would a monster defend the weak? Would a monster take on the mortal shell after ascension to suffer and sacrifice his life, his very essence, for the realm he defends? Would a monster battle the masters of tyranny and destruction? You say he "Stole" the souls of his followers, but I tell you, any true follower of Torm would be willing to sacrifice their lives in the battle against the darkness. And not out of blindness as you assume, but out of the knowledge that he is WORTHY of us and he has EARNED our faith in him. His deeds and actions to safeguard our realm is the pillar, the mountain on which we faithful stand."

"You ask who judges Torm? You say the Triad of gods could not defy Torm. You must be a being of immense power to know the thoughts and abilities of the gods themselves. You seem to forget the Godswars. While Torm is powerful, he is not beyond the powers of his fellow deities. They do not sit in fear of him, but in respect of him. Tyr would not have bestowed his supreme powers lightly. Gods have rules and when they are broken men shall weep, for that is when gods do battle."

"Torm is allowed his Lordship in the Celestial realm of good and righteousness not because he stole or conquered, but because he was worthy, he earned his place through immense sacrifice and dedication."

He looks to Camael with compassion.

"I do not blame you or feel anger towards you brother. But what has happened that would harden your heart so, to the one who sacrificed so much for the realm you live in? Tell me, so that I may rectify this wrong."

Re: Sermon In The Streets

"A monster who would defend the weak; one who needs the weak to fuel his strength. The gods are little without faith, else would-be holymen like yourself would become quite needless in the world. A monster who would battle against tyranny incarnate; a tyrant who feels his own reign threatened." Camael lists his ideas cordially, so very clearly convinced of his perspective. His bare hand rests gently on the grip of his sword, thumb toying with the pommel. His eyes linger on the banner.

"If Torm indeed sacrificed his life, he wouldn't continue to haunt the skies and the minds of those who would mete out justice of his false axioms. Further, if he asked people who valued themselves as his followers to do something, anything, they would not deny it. It wasn't a fair decision. These men and women had no afterlives and simply ceased to be. No god of justice or compassion would ask this of his followers."

Then, he settles his eyes on Raguel, giving his head a slow tip forward. "There is much you are not aware of, preacher. Much harm that could be done by invoking such a being here, a land yet free of Faerun's lazy, fat, disingenuous deities. Therefore, I issue you this challenge."

The young man draws out his sword, holding it off to his side. It appears more an ornamental thing than a proper weapon. The cross-guard and chappe are forged from gold, a soft, inappropriate metal. The blade itself is too light to be steel. He wears no armour and carries no shield, wielding nothing but the sword. "You and I will have a duel, right here. If you are the victor, I will yield all of my claims of Torm and apologize. You will be smiting an evil, one who dares defy the Realms' appointed justicar. If I defeat you, you will allow me to burn this banner of yours."

Then, Camael adds with a flourish of his hand, "of course, to deny the duel is to yield." The people who had remained to watch the exchange thus far spread away, giving the pair a berth to fight in. A few leave to inform other commoners of the event. Watchmen watch on wearily, seeming unmotivated to interfere with what they must consider a dispute between outlanders. "Perhaps, true to the form of your coward god, you may wish to find a second to fight for you. I will not judge you for it. 'Tis merely something learned of your faith."

Re: Sermon In The Streets

Raguel watches with calm composer as the youth draws his blade. The reflection of the act captured in a contorted almost comical way in the polished armor of Raguel. His hands remain where they are, one firmly grasping the banner the other fisted against his hip.

"I pity you. For you seem to be greatly confused. You mistake me for a cleric of Bane or Cyric. I am a healer and guardian of this realm and do not draw my sword lightly. You claim I would be smiting evil, but all I see before me is a misguided youth. I implore you to stop this warmongering. This city has seen enough bloodshed!"

"You call out Torm and denounce him, slander his righteous name, yet you give me no reason as to why? Only shallow words and threats that are merely based in the warped opinion of your mind. I stand on the foundation of centuries of goodly and righteous deeds that Torm has performed. Unless you give me cause you cannot provoke me into needless, worthless bloodshed."

Raguel now looks out into the crowd of people gathering.

"This my brothers and sisters is why I am here. There are those among you filled with anger and hatred. But I say to you, from the words of Torm, Blessed are the peacemakers among you, for they know the cost of war."

Raguel refocuses his attention on Camael.

"So I say to you brother. Peace! Sheath your sword and let us join hands, together we may work toward a brighter future for this land. A future where people may walk freely and fear not the shadows. Stand with me against the dark tides that would destroy us all. What say you?"

Raguel's hand, gleaming in the golden light of the sun, is extended in friendship toward Camael.

"I do stand against what would destroy you." The point of Camael's sword sinks through the cobblestones as though they had been sand. The youth rests his weight against the weapon, almost wearily, as he watches the Tormtar. "You risk so much by spreading Torm's name and banner to this island. So, so much."

Ignorant to the dwindling commonfolk who spectate, Camael continues to address Raguel directly. Although he does wish to stifle the spread of Torm's religion, he regards the moment as one solely shared between the two individuals. He seizes the moment to slide his sleeves up along his arms, out of the way, not minding at all that he's inadequately dressed for a fight.

"What do you believe will happen when one deity spreads where his kith have yet to? Visions will appear in the minds of other faithful of an island where their word is needed. Soon, their enemies will see and they, too, will come. They will come armed to the teeth. You seek to deliver bloodshed, albeit indirectly." Camael sighs, closing his eyes for a moment as he collects his thoughts. Finally, he shakes his head.

"I won't kill you, prophet. Only defeat you here. You will be bound, as a man of honour, by your word. In your defeat you will let me burn your banner. If you defeat me, either fatally or otherwise, I will do nothing against your supposed budding church here. If you do not fight or find a second to fight for you, you will yield, thereby forfeiting your claim and allowing me to burn the banner regardless. It is your choice."

(( From this point, this event will be handled in-game.
