Neverwinter Online

Just in case anyone had an inclin of interest but wasn't aware, the new Neverwinter MMO by Cryptic Studios is having a closed Beta for a couple days. It's easy enough to get in, there's plenty of sites giving away beta keys.

Here's one.

Re: Neverwinter Online

As I said, they're easy enough to get. Follow the link, do what it says. You just need an e-mail address. I have one set up for just such an occaision, to save my main address being spam-bombed.

Anyway, my thoughts on the game so far...

I actually like it, and I wasn't sure I would given that it's Cryptic Studios. I mean, I enjoyed Champions Online for a while, despite the many frustrating bugs

Graphically, it's more polished than NWN2, with a dash of its' own style. The combat is much quicker than the previous 'real-turn based' NW titles. It all handles fluidly for the most part and is surprisingly satisfying, especially when tearing through groups of kobolds with a greatsword and scattering the corpses in a ragdoll fashion.

I've only tried the sword and board class and the great sword class, which are two of the five available. The others are Wizard, Cleric and Rogue, all of which are available to every race, human, wood elf, half elf, dwarf, halfling, half orc and some very demonic looking tieflings, who all have their own slight racial advantages. There's drow too, but either those are coming later or you have to pay for them.

You get a decent amount of character customisation available to you, ala Skyrim, but I haven't seen much variation in armour/shield/weapon styles yet, though that could be due to the saturation of lowbies. You are limited to using only class specific gear that the others can't use, and vice versa, and there is no multiclassing. It is also still in Beta, mind. I'm sure there's plenty of patching and content to be introduced yet before it all goes live.

The level up and character advancement follows a progression more suitable for MMOs than trying to emulate D&D rules. Your class abilities activate cooldowns which you have to wait out before you can use them again. The main downsides I can see is that, while there are player populated hubs, most of the action takes place in isolated 'instances' with pretty much only one way to go, with a glowy line trailing ahead of you to lead you around, though this can probably be turned off. Anyone familiar with D&D Online will probably note a similar style of play.

Also, aside from your starting attributes, it doesn't seem to be until level ten where you can actually start making build choices that might differentiate you from all the others of your class.

The plot is standard fare Adventure Time, at least as far as I've gotten, but I won't say more than that it seems to be based in and around Neverwinter and its' immediate surroundings. There's also a system in place where players can create their own little instanced missions for the rest of the players to run through, and you can rate them afterwards, but I don't know enough about how that works and what its limitations are yet. I will say I was quickly scouting out quests, following the glowy marker trail, killing things and getting back to hand it in before seeking the next.

If you don't like MMOs or RPGs where that occuipes a significant focus of the game, then this won't be for you. It seems like there will be crafting, but this isn't fully implemented yet.

Er. Running out of things to say, so for your viewing pleasure I present to you FISTBEARD and his balding halfling buddy NoBeard, as they converse with another dwarf.

I did not like Champions Online, too cartoonish for me. But I currently play Star Trek Online, which is a nice game. I have not tried Neverwinter, but I can imagine the gameplay and interface will be similar to STO.
There are no free beta keys. But there are guaranteed access to beta keys with a purchase of a $20 package.

I have been playing, once I got past the first few areas the story is picking up and I am really getting into it. I love the cleric class, much more of a divine magic based cleric, less smashy with macey.

I am on the Dragon "shard" though I heard they will be merging them eventually.

My characters are Andrune variations:

Elluira Kal'enel
Cefdnir Hawthorne

Username: Elluir

I dont like the lack of classes, feels just like another MMO. they have taken away the strengths of a dungeons and dragons game.

Well it IS still in beta. I've played my fair share of MMOs and I have to say I'd rather play one with lore I am familiar with. It runs smooth etc. I imagine there will be a buttload of classes soon enough. No ranger/ranged is really strange at startup though.

I never tried it and I think I will wait till the official launch. I hope it will be better than DDO.
